Welcome to the mainland of Spain

Spain has four well-known sailing areas:

  • The North Atlantic Coast
  • The Mediterranean Coast
  • The Balearic Islands (See separate Map)
  • The Canary Islands (See Separate Map)

The North Atlantic Coast

Many arrive here by sailing up from the Mediterranean via Portugal or by sailing across the Bay of Biscay and some come by ferry to Santander.

There are many fine sailing clubs on this Atlantic coast two of the oldest being in Vigo and Baiona. The later having strong associations with both the New York and Royal Lymington Yacht Clubs.

The area is ideal for a stay and sail holiday as the Spain’s Parador hotels offer reasonable rates and many are right on the coast.

The Mediterranean Coast

This coast starts with the often missed area of the Gulf of Cadiz and stretches all the way to the north of Barcelona and the French boarder.

All along this coast there are lovely little harbours where boats can be rented a day trip or for the whole of your holiday. For those interested in sailing from the Mainland to the Balearics or vice versa the shortest distance is between Denia and the Island of Ibiza (about 60 nautical miles).
