About Croatia

Croatia has one of the most significant positions for Mediterranean yachting or as some would call it " Nautical Tourism ".

We have found it magnificent and now, with its forty-odd new marinas it has become a modern Mecca for Yachting. The coast is only 600 Kilometres long but it winds its way around nearly 2000 kilometres of inlets, coves, cliffs, headlands and beaches. There are over a thousand islands of which only sixty-six are inhabited, the rest being a yachting paradise.

History

The Croats have been living on the eastern Adriatic coast for nearly fourteen centuries and have been developing their national identity within the frame work of Western Europe, being recognised today by the United Nations Organisation as an Independent State. Croatia is looking forward to joining the European Union within the next few years.

Attractions

Croatia has many attractions, clear turquoise seas, ancient fishing villages, many national parks, the Kornati Islands being the most famous amongst the yachting fraternity, food and service that leaves you wondering how they do it for the price.

Festivals

A large majority of the population are Roman Catholic and this results in the many of the festivals celebrated being religious based with the rest being about Croatian folklore. Make sure you know them for your visit as everything closes including banks.

Food and Wine

Croatian food has been influenced by the cultures surrounding the country with the inland towns and villages showing Hungarian and Viennese origins. On the coast the food takes on a more Mediterranean style, with fresh fish and vegetables cooked simply. The Dalmatian region has had great wines since Roman times. The Islands Vis, Hvar and Korcula among others have their own special vintages - all well worth a try.

Getting There

From Central Europe most people to drive to the northern ports, but the rest of the world flies in. Croatian Airlines put on direct flights to Split and Pula in the European summer months. Otherwise fly to Zagreb and catch the internal flights to your final destination.
